What gcc version are you using? There's a check that disables the new
intrinsics-based code for gcc below 4.0, but perhaps we should be
disabling it for some 4.x versions as well... Maybe below 4.2 or
something like that. Someone should test more of these to determine the
exact version starting with which the new code is beneficial.
