Thanks.  No, that's not it.  "--test" is unaffected by the Idle setting.
You have to actually run JtR on a password hash file for a minute.

While your tests are unrelated to the Idle setting, they do show that
your CPU is indeed not 8-core (but quad-core with Hyperthreading), and
they also hint that there's some slowdown with the MPI build.  To get a
better idea of the latter, I suggest that you run
"mpirun -np 1 ./john --test" (on an MPI-enabled build indeed).
