The real issue as I see it is not that the terminal gets screwed, but 
that a single ctrl-c will never end the process. One ctrl-c will produce 
the "Wait..." text but then it will never end unless the filter lets 
some word through. If fixing this would impact performance I'd vote for 
not fixing it though. And maybe it's academic. In real usage, the filter 
would let *something* through, otherwise it'd be pretty pointless...
