My system is GNU/Linux Debian etch 2.6.18-6-amd64. Hardware is Q6600
with 7907M of ram. I noticed same kind of improvement on another
amd64-machine in c/s-rate. John was configured with linux-x86-64-option.

You are correct. I only have few (1-5) hashes usually. Maybe I did
something different or something has changed (in OS or hardware) since
last time. I built last version of john again with same option and
didn't recognise any difference on memory usage.

At the moment those processes are still taking only 6M of memory.
