Maybe, but John the Ripper does not attack remote servers on its own.
It expects that you provide it with password hashes that you obtain by
other means.

You don't really need to crack that password. Instead, you may boot the
laptop off a Windows password recovery CD or floppy such as this one:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
and reset the password.
Alternatively, if you insist on recovering the original password, you
may refer to this tutorial (which I just found with Google):

(it does not use John the Ripper optimally, but that's not the point).
